CVS agrees to pay $315 million to settle federal opioid-dispensing case

1. CVS agrees to pay $315 million to settle federal opioid-dispensing case

DOJ says that from 2013 to 2025, CVS filled unlawful opioid prescriptions, including excessive doses, early refills and "trinity" combinations, and billed federal health programs for many of them [1]. Under the deal, CVS must set up a reporting hotline and monitor dispensing under an agreement with the DEA [1]. CVS denies the allegations, and the settlement is not an admission of liability [1][2]. 2. U.S. measles cases pass 4,000 as Pennsylvania reports another death

The CDC had counted 4,080 confirmed measles cases across 47 jurisdictions as of October 8, 2026, and 42 outbreaks this year. It lists two deaths and notes that this figure may change [3]. A Pennsylvania county coroner reported a measles-associated death of a 39-year-old woman with underlying conditions [4]. Fierce Healthcare reports this is Pennsylvania's sixth measles-related death this year [5].

3. DEA moves to put concentrated kratom derivatives in Schedule I

A DEA notice published October 14 says the agency intends to temporarily place 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl in Schedule I when products exceed a concentration threshold that HHS recommended on October 8 [6]. The notice cites 86 FDA adverse-event reports involving 7-OH, including nine deaths. The order can't take effect until at least 30 days after publication [6].

4. Safety concerns grow over Vykat XR for Prader-Willi syndrome

Adverse-event reports obtained by STAT through a records request link Neurocrine Biosciences' Vykat XR to seven deaths and nearly 100 hospitalizations since its approval about 18 months ago. STAT notes these reports don't establish causation [7]. In August, patient advocacy groups urged careful patient selection and close monitoring without calling for withdrawal [8]. Neurocrine says it is assessing the evidence, working with the FDA, and plans a new study in patients with complex conditions beginning in Q1 2027 [9].
