Russia tells WHO no plague cases in Irkutsk as lab worker’s death goes unexplained

1. Russia tells WHO no plague cases in Irkutsk; lab worker's death still unexplained

An employee of a Siberian plague research institute died of severe pneumonia. Russian officials call the cause "unknown etiology" and say tests of nearly 200 monitored contacts found no plague [1][2]. WHO rates the international risk as very low, but it remains unclear whether plague was ruled out in the deceased worker herself [1][2].

2. New York declares a statewide disaster emergency over measles

Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency on October 5. New York has 108 confirmed cases this year: 7 in New York City and 101 elsewhere, concentrated in under-immunized rural communities [3][4]. The order lets paramedics, pharmacists and others give measles vaccines and lets nurses order testing [3][4].

3. FDA approves the first heart valve designed to grow with children (Oct 1)

The FDA approved the Autus Size-Adjustable Valve, a surgically implanted pulmonary valve for children with congenital pulmonary valve disease. It can be widened from about 13 mm to 22 mm by balloon catheter, which may reduce repeat open-heart surgeries [5]. In the 62-patient pivotal study, there were no deaths or strokes. Three valve-frame fractures and two cases of reduced leaflet motion occurred, and none caused symptoms [5]. (See lead article.)

4. Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine honors optogenetics

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel won the 2026 prize for discoveries about light-gated ion channels and optogenetics [6][7]. The technique lets researchers switch individual nerve cells on or off with light, and it is now a standard tool in neuroscience labs [7].
